Look what's growing in my basement...cardoons.
I can already picture them lining my driveway and amongst my fig trees. It's not easy to find cardoon transplants for sale at garden centres, so I grow this plant from seed.
My friend Niki Jabbour's new book Groundbreaking Food Gardens: 73 Plans that Will Change the Way You Grow Your Garden is out. I'm stoked about her book--and stoked about the plan I contributed, which brings together fig trees, cardoons, lavender, and chard in my Fig-Pig patio.
The bold, angular, grey cardoon leaves amongst the deep green, lobed leaves of my fig trees inspired this design.
I talk about cooking cardoon in my talk Crops That Wow. Visit my upcoming talks page to see when I'm next giving this talk in your area.
